A Weekend of Arizonans for Children - Easter!

Image
Spring was in the air last weekend at Arizonans for Children!  We had egg hunts at both Visitation Centers so that the families on site can create happy memories and share the Easter experience. From Visitation Center Coordinator Paige " I wish I was able to record the little boy who cams running outside yelling “EEEGGGGGSSSS” 🥚  Little kids, big kids, only blue egg loving kids - the Easter Egg Hunt at our Mesa Visitation Center was a huge success! No one left without a smile on their face today  🐰 Holidays are another milestone of time spent in the foster care system.  Thanks to our community and their generosity we can help make them memorable and fun. Arizonans for Children Mentor Kathy has 2 mentees.  2 little boys in foster care.  Kathy spends time with these boys taking them out for fun activities and experiencing new things.  She has changed their lives by showing them there is someone that will be there when the...

Technology for Kids in the Foster Care System - It's a Different World

Image
The next Arizonans for Children STEM Pi-oneer class is getting ready to start and as I prepare and plan the importance and value of this class are in the forefront of my thoughts. Kids in the foster care system do not have access to technology.  How are they doing their homework?  Their life circumstances set them apart from other kids, lack of technology only makes it harder for them. In the Arizonans for Children Pi-oneer program the kids assemble a Raspberry Pi micro computer, download the operating system, explore the vast functionality of the Pi, learn about the importance of internet safety and security as well as learn basic coding and programming.  At the end of the final class the kids that have attended all classes take the entire computer system with them. Every aspect of this class is geared to the population Arizonans for Children serves, kids in the foster care system. The micro computer itself is very inexpensive and not a lot of people understa...

Commitment and 1 Caring Adult - From Statistic to Success

Image
com·mit·ment Dictionary result for commitment /kəˈmitmənt/ noun 1. the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc. As you sit at work, or school, or home, or in traffic stop and think about what life feels like to a child that is taken in to the foster care system. Everything they know if their life changes.  It was for the safety and well being but that doesn't change the fact that everything they knew is gone from their lives. They start at a new school, they "live" with a new family with new rules.  Everything that was familiar and made them them is now gone.    The Arizonans for Children Mentor program matches volunteers from our community with school age children in the foster care system.  Our Mentors pick the child up from their foster placement and take them out into the community.  The Mentor commits to the child, just 8 hours a month.   8 hours a month is en...
