Mentor Visit Highlights - Help Clear the Wait List!

Arizonans for Children Mentors are amazing people that just simply care.  These volunteers pick their mentee up, a mentee is a child in foster care, and take them out in to the community.  They explore, they discover, they bond and they heal. 8 hours a month and a year commitment to the child changes lives!  Both the mentee as well as the Mentor. From Mentors Eric and Suzy: " This week with our Big Mentee - Batting Cages, Hot Wings, a Museum, Books, and blue Ice Cream! We started at  D-BAT Mesa  for some batting practice, our little buddy loves soccer, but wanted to give the batting cages a try, fun stuff. Next stop, refueling at  Native New Yorker Gilbert & the 60 , little buddy loves hot wings. Then we went to the  Arizona Museum of Natural History  - pretty amazing place, I've lived in Mesa a long time, but have never been there. Our buddy loved the dinosaurs, the panning for gold, the jail, and the Arizona in the movies secti...

Commitment and 1 Caring Adult - From Statistic to Success

Image
com·mit·ment Dictionary result for commitment /kəˈmitmÉ™nt/ noun 1. the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc. As you sit at work, or school, or home, or in traffic stop and think about what life feels like to a child that is taken in to the foster care system. Everything they know if their life changes.  It was for the safety and well being but that doesn't change the fact that everything they knew is gone from their lives. They start at a new school, they "live" with a new family with new rules.  Everything that was familiar and made them them is now gone.    The Arizonans for Children Mentor program matches volunteers from our community with school age children in the foster care system.  Our Mentors pick the child up from their foster placement and take them out into the community.  The Mentor commits to the child, just 8 hours a month.   8 hours a month is en...

Giving Tuesday at Arizonans for Children

Image
In the spirit of Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday - Giving Tuesday is a global initiative of giving back.  Join Arizonans for Children on a global day of giving this  #GivingTuesday Arizonans for Children provides services for children in the foster care system. We have 2 Visitation Centers where kids come to spend time with their parents and siblings in a fun, vibrant, non-judgmental and safe environment. These centers allow healing and bonding as the families work towards reunification. Even if the child is never reunified with their parents; time at the center allows healing memories to be created that help with what ever trauma brought them into care.  Our Tutor/Mentor program matches school age children in foster care with volunteers from the community. Just 8 hours a month and a year commitment will change the life of a child in care, your life too. Arizonans for Children does much more to support our community. From STEM classes, t...

Mentor Visits - Changing lives one child at a time!

How much does it cost to change a life?  8 hours a month and a year commitment. Arizonans for Children Mentors have the ability to be the difference in the life of a child in foster care. Mentor extraordinaire Kathy has formed such a bond with her "Master Mentee"!  For over a year she has picked him up from his foster placement and spent quality time with him doing things he otherwise miss out on like a day at the Arizona Museum of Natural History. When a friend gave Kathy tickets she was able to take her Master Menee and learn all about dinosaurs! In Kathy's words: "It was a dinosaur date day!  🦕 🦖 Thanks to  Krista  for giving me tickets, Master Mentee and I could enjoy a wonderful day at Arizona Museum of Natural History! The museum is AMAZING! Thanks to  Arizonans for Children , mentoring a child in foster care is made possible. Volunteer. Mentoring a minimum of 8 hrs a month can make a difference in a child’s life." ...

Through the Eyes of a Child

Image
In 2011 when my now husband and I planned our wedding one thing we really wanted to do was capture memories of our family.  We had a professional photographer on site but we also gave every child in attendance a camera so we could see what they captured and what was most important to them. One of our Arizonans for Children Mentors Kelly recently shared a post that had me reflecting on this special time in my life and looking through our pictures. Kelly said " My mentee wanted to me to take photos of him so that he could give them to his family...but, when I handed him my camera he fell in love with it! He said it was one of his favorite things to do that day! Now I have lots of photos of my family, thanks to my personal paparazzi!  😂  " Arizonans for Children Mentors have such a wonderful opportunity to discover and re-discover through the eyes of their mentee.  When we stop and see what is the most important to the child then our perspective shifts....
