National Comic Book Day - collecting comic books for foster kids



Tuesday September 25th is National Comic Book Day! 
Share your love of comics with kids in foster care - drop off new or gently loved comics at either Arizonans for Children Visitation Centers.

I bet there are events all over the valley to celebrate comic book day. Finding the right reading material can spark a life long love of literacy.  

How fun would it be to set up a comic book station at both centers?
Have you ever created your own comic book?  Imagine a child in foster care creating one.....would they overcome the trauma they experienced on the pages of the comic book? or would they allow their future dreams unfold on the pages?

Weekend mentoring fun!!!

I asked my mentees last week if they wanted to go peach picking on Sunday with my wife and I, one of our annual traditions we try to do every year. I let them know that we would have to pick them up early that morning to get a head start on the hot weather. They agreed. Spontaneously I decided to go fishing Friday evening. I called the group home and asked if the home had any plans/activities and if my 2 mentees wanted to go with me. They both were eager to get out of the house for a few hours on a Friday night to go fishing. We tried canal “A” and after a while gave up on it and tried the other side of the overpass on canal “A”. We managed to get a few bites, which was exciting for the boys, even though there were no significant tugs on the line. We then decided to try this other canal spot I recently caught a few at. They managed to get a few more hits and then we finished the night with not one of us landing a catfish. Kind of a let down…I’ve been wanting...

Your work optimizes the very reason we celebrate Labor Day! It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country." Arizonans for Children volunteers help ensure the well-being of vulnerable children is met.  Our Visitation Center and Supervised Visits volunteers that check the families in, offering a welcoming smile, keeping delicious pastries out for all to enjoy and keeping the areas clean and safe for everyone.   Volunteers host a variety of classes, workshops and activities that help the families engage and bond....

Thank you Paul with PEM!

The Arizonans for Children STEM Pi-oneers class was lucky to have Paul with PEM attend and talk with the kids, kids in foster care last week.  Paul sat right with the kids and talked to them and listened to them offering valuable life lessons. The kids in class are good kids in a bad situation.  They did not chose to be in foster care.  They have been bounced around from placement to placement, school to school, family to group home.   To have someone to listen to them, actually hear what they have to say was powerful and healing.  It gave the kids a sense of value-that what they had to say and could contribute was important.   Within 15 minutes of the class ended I had calls asking when Paul would be back next.  That is pretty telling of the impact his conversation had.   Thank you Paul for being there and listening to these kids and sharing your knowledge and experience.   There is always a way to make a diff...
