Mentors Eric and Suzy's updates are a highlight of my week!




Week #3 with our Mentee!
We started out by fueling up at Snooze Eatery in Tempe. Our little buddy loves Chocolate Chip Pancakes!

Then we heading over to Brunswick for some Bowling, our buddy wowed us by throwing a strike the first try! We had a lot of fun, plan to go back so I can practice more...

Then we headed to the Hobby Depot. We decided our buddy needed to work on some hands on building skills, so a skill level 2 model that he had to glue & paint would be ideal and this one doesn't have too many parts - perfect! He picked out a 72 Hurst Olds, which is exactly what all the cool guys would pick. HD is a neat, privately owned shop, the owners were great. https://www.thehobbydepot.com/
We had to stop at Joe's Italian Ice to plan our upcoming outings, and have a Joe Latti! Good stuff.

Weekend mentoring fun!!!

I asked my mentees last week if they wanted to go peach picking on Sunday with my wife and I, one of our annual traditions we try to do every year. I let them know that we would have to pick them up early that morning to get a head start on the hot weather. They agreed. Spontaneously I decided to go fishing Friday evening. I called the group home and asked if the home had any plans/activities and if my 2 mentees wanted to go with me. They both were eager to get out of the house for a few hours on a Friday night to go fishing. We tried canal “A” and after a while gave up on it and tried the other side of the overpass on canal “A”. We managed to get a few bites, which was exciting for the boys, even though there were no significant tugs on the line. We then decided to try this other canal spot I recently caught a few at. They managed to get a few more hits and then we finished the night with not one of us landing a catfish. Kind of a let down…I’ve been wanting...

Happy Labor Day

This Labor Day weekend and every day  Arizonans for Children  thanks and honors those that selflessly volunteer to improve the lives of children in foster care while helping families heal. Your work optimizes the very reason we celebrate Labor Day! It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country." Arizonans for Children volunteers help ensure the well-being of vulnerable children is met.  Our Visitation Center and Supervised Visits volunteers that check the families in, offering a welcoming smile, keeping delicious pastries out for all to enjoy and keeping the areas clean and safe for everyone.   Volunteers host a variety of classes, workshops and activities that help the families engage and bond....

Thank you Paul with PEM!

The Arizonans for Children STEM Pi-oneers class was lucky to have Paul with PEM attend and talk with the kids, kids in foster care last week.  Paul sat right with the kids and talked to them and listened to them offering valuable life lessons. The kids in class are good kids in a bad situation.  They did not chose to be in foster care.  They have been bounced around from placement to placement, school to school, family to group home.   To have someone to listen to them, actually hear what they have to say was powerful and healing.  It gave the kids a sense of value-that what they had to say and could contribute was important.   Within 15 minutes of the class ended I had calls asking when Paul would be back next.  That is pretty telling of the impact his conversation had.   Thank you Paul for being there and listening to these kids and sharing your knowledge and experience.   There is always a way to make a diff...
